Cast & Crew of Contengan Hidup - Luahan Tidak Berketepian (2011)
NUS Malay Dance was first established in the early eighties and was renamed ‘NUS Ilsa Tari’ in 1998. The prolific renaming ushered in a new era of creativity, modernity and daring. Under the guidance of tutor/choreographer Osman Abdul Hamid – a Singapore Young Artist Award winner – Ilsa experiments with both traditional and contemporary Malay dance. NUS Ilsa Tari specialises in dance fusions and has established a stellar reputation within the national dance scene. Combining hard work, passion, fun and the flair for the dramatic, Ilsa and its team of dedicated dancers continue to inspire audiences with uniquely vibrant performances.
about our choreographer
Osman Abdul Hamid joined People’s Association and the former Sriwana Malay Dance Groups in 1979 and was trained by Nongchik Ghani and Mr Salleh Buang. A tutor/choreographer of NUS Ilsa Tari since 1995, he is also the choreographer of the People’s Association Malay Dance group, Teater Tari Era. Osman has been conferred the prestigious Singapore Youth Award (Service) and the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council. Under the tutelage of Osman, the People’s Association Talents recently completed and won the Best Choreographer Award at the 5th Sabah International Folklore Festival.

Despite the rain and all the mad rush, getting ready literally seconds before the show (which explains the lack of pictures) Arts Fest 08 was a blast! I have so many people to thank!! In no particular order of importance...

Join us at this short dance session to try out Malay Dance for yourself. This is definitely not an audition but merely an exposure session for anyone to learn more about Malay Dance. No dance background is required and it is open to all NUS students. Admission is free and registration is required.

Under the direction of Osman Abdul Hamid, NUS Ilsa Tari presents Akur – Menyerah… Takdir (A Vow – In the Face of Destiny). This production will explore women’s roles and responsibilities in life. Women’s God-given role to procreate is one that is truly divine and unique. Daughter, wife, mother... Do women have the strength to bear these responsibilities? Can women emerge from social constraints, empowered, to survive and succeed through life’s challenges? Women may strive to step forward and play the roles that were once only reserved for men. However, no matter what, she will always be governed by laws of nature, which are inescapable by all. Women’s roles as daughter, wife and mother are predestined; regardless our status or the nature of our society.
